Hello everyone,
Math - Mr. Mitchell's math group (MMMG) has begun using decimal numbers to show lengths e.g. 4.6 cm This new place value (tenths) is a giant step forward in their developing understanding of numbers. Please help support this by measuring things around the house in centimetres,  including the new tenths place value. We also have been relating this distance (e.g. 4.6 cm) to it's equivalent 46 mm. Our work in Measurement is coming to a close in the next few days. A quiz on some important content will likely be on Monday Dec 2nd.

Language - Mr. Mitchell's Language group (MMLG)  are creating a narrative story and developing how it's 5 main parts: characters, setting, problem, solution, ending, can be explored. Our exciting story so far is about 2 kids who go to the lake but soon discover they have not brought any food!
-Our library visit is tomorrow and if their are any library books at home that should be returned or renewed please send them tomorrow.
-Students are to read a self-selected book each month and present at least one book review each month on their chosen book.

Science - Our next unit of study will be "Gears and Pulleys" and it will begin on Monday.

Other - Our student teacher from University of Ottawa, Ms. Ross will be joining our class daily for the month of December beginning Dec 2nd. Welcome Ms. Ross!

Thanks to those parents who have replenished their son/daughter's supplies recently (pencils, eraser, ruler, scissors, glue sticks, markers, coloured pencils). Please ask if your child needs any of these materials on an on-going basis.

Regards,
D. Mitchell

Math - Mr. Mitchell's math group - (MMMG) student's are asked for homework to construct in their math grid notebooks, 3 different rectangles each with a perimeter of 20cm. They are to label the sides of the rectangles. This will be the 3rd day in a row we have done questions of this kind so it shouldn't be something they haven't (contraction) seen.
Language - Mr. Mitchell's Language group (MMLG) completed our study on contractions and predicting while reading. Please encourage your son/daughter to show you when a contraction appears in their self-selected reading times at home, and see if they are able to say what words the contraction means.
Science - Most of the presentations were given yesterday and today. There are a couple left for next week. Our next unit of study will be Gears and Pulleys. This will be developed by myself and our student teacher from University of Ottawa, Ms. Ross.
Other-
Please help ensure students have different indoor and outdoor footwear.
Many students are completely out of their September materials (pencils, erasers etc). Please ask your child what supplies they are in need of.

Science
The big news is the animal habitat project that we are working on. Students are asked to comment on 4 areas about their animal and teach/present that to the class in an interesting way. The 4 areas of content headings are: Describe (or build) the animal's habitat, how does the animal fit into it's food chain, describe (or draw) what adaptations your animal has made to help it survive, some interesting facts. Presentations begin Nov 21st.
Language
We will be going to our weekly visit to the school library on Thursday if your son/daughter has not yet chosen their book for their book review for the month of November)
Also, we have chosen to work on making predictions while we read as an effective reading strategy to keep us engaged in the reading.
OTHER
- individual and class pictures went home Wed and Thurs of this week.
- Photo retakes will be Thursday November 21st. If you wish for your child to have their individual picture re-taken then they need to return the photo envelope and proof contents to the school by this Thursday.
- Please assist us in having students with indoor and outdoor footwear now that the snow and cold is here.
-Bordenball permission forms were sent home for grade 4 students wishing to try out for the grade 4 school team. A signed permission form is necessary for a student wishing to tryout for the team.

Hello everyone, here are some of the exciting things that are happening in our classroom these days:
Math -
measuring in mm,and cm using a ruler. Finding the perimeter and area of rectangles and squares. We have recently worked on writing a multiplication sentence to show how to find the area of a shape can be found quickly.
** ask your son/daughter what the approximate area of their hand is... see what they say!

Language
We have started learning about contractions, and each student is asked to do a "book review" each month on a book that they have picked themselves. They are asked to have the book with them to show the cover and read a short excerpt from during their review.
* ask your son/daughter what book they have chosen.
